I just got an email from GrandCentral (totally awesome service, by the way):
Service Update: Changes to call recording feature
We wanted to let you know of an important update to how our call recording feature works. Starting today, we will be adding audio notifications to make it easier for people to know when recording has been turned on and off. When you press the “4” key during a call to start recording, a voice will state “Call recording on” and when pressing “4” again it will say “Recording off”. This message will be heard on both sides of the phone call and the “Call recording on” message will be recorded as part of the recording.
In addition to making the recording status clearer during the call, audio notifications serve as a reminder to inform the other party the call is being recorded. There can be significant penalties for recording a phone call without the other party’s consent in some states, and we highly recommend that you check your local laws before using the call record feature.
Sincerely,
Craig Walker
When I first read the subject, I was stoked. I thought they were finally going to allow outgoing calls to be recorded… but by the time I finished reading the email, I was rather disappointed. Not only was I wrong (no outgoing calls) but they’ve decided to be a Nanny about things.
What’s next? When someone calls your GrandCentral number, they’ll be greeted with a message saying this phone number is not the main line, and they are being routed through GrandCentral(beta)?
